EMERGENCY RESPONSES TO WAR ON IRAQ.

Candlelight vigil 16 March 2003

CANDLELIGHT VIGIL THIS SUNDAY
Wed Mar 26, 2003 12:26:44 a US/Pacific

To all LMNOP's and all folks who want to stop this war:

This coming Sunday evening, March 30, at 7:00 PM, LMNOP will host another candlelight vigil at the columns at the east end of Lake Merritt where we meet for our Sunday afternoon peace walks. It will not replace our regular 3:00 peace walk, of course. It will be IN ADDITION TO . . .

Unlike last time, it will be a quiet vigil to honor those who are dying in Iraq (as well as to show our opposition to this horrible war, of course). We will not have organized singing, but we WILL have Stephen Kelly playing his flute in the background throughout. I also want to have Webb Mealy's "light show" projections of anti-war slogans and images of Iraqi citizens cast onto the top wall of the colonnade, to make it abundantly clear to passing motorists why we are out there.(IF I can FIND him - see next message).

Please spread the word to all your contacts and lists and friends. We hope to have an even bigger group than last time, which was plenty big! Since we have dibs on the best location in town, we ought to put it to good use, huh?

Bring your own candles, and paper cups or something to protect them from the wind, if you can. We will have some extras for those who can't. And please please spread the word.

Beth

SEND NOTE OF SYMPATHY TO FAMILY OF FALLEN U.S. BLACK MUSLIM SOLDIER
Fri Mar 28, 2003 1:23:25 a US/Pacific

This message was sent to us by another LMNOP. By all means send this guy a letter and/or a sympathy card! The father and other members of the family spoke from the heart about the young marine who was killed, and they deserve our support. The Mirror of London had a sympathetic article about this a couple of days ago. If you would like to have a copy sent to you please let us know. - Steve

------------------------------------

The father of a marine killed in a copter crash early in the war criticized Bush on national television, saying something like, "Mr. Bush, I want you to take a close look at this picture. You took away the only son I had." A Black Muslim, he has since gotten a lot of flak, as you can imagine, even as he grieves.

Please take a moment to MAIL the father a sympathy CARD with a PERSONAL NOTE, c/o the Baltimore Sun reporters. Let him know he has the LOVE and SUPPORT of the peace community.

His son's name was Sgt. Kendall Waters-Bey.

COASTGUARD ISLAND VIGIL
Mon Mar 24, 2003 3:14:30 a US/Pacific

Calling all LMNOP's - at yesterday's peace walk (where there were many new people and some returning friends from awhile back - almost 100 of us in all!) one of our longtime "regulars" came up with an idea for an action: protesting at local military bases. (DUH! Why hasn't someone come up with this before now, what with all the creative stuff going on in the peace movement? Good work Dave!)

He has planned the first such action for tomorrow. Please go if you can, for all or part of the time. See Dave's email address at the end of this message, if you have questions.

Beth (who wishes she could quit her job - I miss all the fun!)

WHAT: vigil at the entrance to Coast Guard Island Hold signs that oppose the illegal and immoral attack on Iraq, and urge members of the military to refuse to obey unlawful orders to take part in the war.

WHEN: Tuesday, March 25, 2003, from 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm If the war continues, this may be just the first of many such actions. We'll decide how to move forward after this first action.

WHERE: the intersection of Dennison and Embarcadero, Oakland (at the east end of Embarcadero Cove on the Oakland Estuary) The bridge there is the only way to drive on and off the one remaining military base in Oakland and Alameda.

WHO: initially, an informal group of people, arising out of discussions in the Peace and Freedom Party and in Lake Merritt Neighbors Organized for Peace.

WHY DO IT AT ALL: Disaffected soldiers and veterans played an important role in ending the Vietnam War, and the military's response has partly been to try to make any wars too short for opposition to matter, partly to try build a "professional military" that is isolated from antiwar civilians both at home and in the countries where they may be stationed overseas. Thus it is important that the antiwar movement come into direct contact with members of the military, and one way we can do so is by holding demonstrations at the entrances to local bases. Even if we directly reach only a few service members, the mere fact that we are there will have the added benefit of freaking out the military command structure.

WHY DO IT HERE: You might think that the Coast Guard has nothing to do with the war, they just protect our coast and help boats in distress. They do protect our coast and help boats in distress, but that's not all they do. The Coast Guard is now part of the Department of Homeland Security, and the Integrated Support Command Alameda (the formal name of the base on Coast Guard Island) hosts the headquarters of the Maritime Defense Zone Pacific (a joint activity with the Navy). This command is responsible for "naval coastal warfare" in the Pacific Area (which includes the Indian Ocean and the Persian or Arabian Gulf in the Coast Guard's and Navy's division of the world). Planning for such activity, as well as some support for Coast Guard units sent to the Gulf, like the Port Security Unit 311 deployed from San Pedro in February, are done from right here.

Every Tuesday Morning: Overpass Signs

The Berkeley Peace Walk and Vigil folks along with some LMNOP's are still doing the NO BLOOD FOR OIL banner thing on the pedestrian bridge (now re-named the Berkeley Peace Arch!) over Highway 80 near University Ave. in Berkeley, every Tuesday morning. They would welcome any more hardy souls who like getting up early and spreading the anti-war message to thousands of commuters. Below is their message:

We will continue to assert our first amendment rights while communicating a simple message to drivers during rush hour. Recently, CHP officers ordered protesters to vacate the newly constructed Pedestrian Bridge over I-80 in Berkeley, and other pedestrian overpasses, stating that banners, signs, and flags would not be allowed near freeway locations, claiming that they are ‘distracting’ and unsafe. Meanwhile, the CHP and CALTRANS do not censor the voice of corporate America as evidenced by highway billboards, and advertisements displayed on trucks, planes, and blimps flying over freeways displaying corporate advertisements. Similarly, cell phone conversations while driving have not been outlawed, and neither have drinking or eating while operating a motor vehicle. Clearly safety is not the primary issue.

It may be acknowledged that signs physically attached to the overpass structure may be construed as ‘illegal’; however, there is no law preventing anyone from carrying a sign or banner on public property including a pedestrian/bicycle bridge.

By physically holding our banners, we have been able to display our anti-war message for 2 ˝ hours uninterrrupted. More people will make this action more successful. The banner we will display is a simple one (albeit, now with added graphic appeal), with 3 foot high letters and legible from half a mile, much more legible than CALTRANS’ own freeway signage. Here’s the message:

NO BLOOD FOR OIL

We will be assembling at Aquatic Park in Berkeley before walking up to the Pedestrian Bridge over I-80 to vigil with our 4’ x 20’ banner. Other banners are encouraged, but we are asking that nothing be physically attached to the bridge structure. Please join us.

WHERE: Aquatic Park (2nd Street and Addison Street)

DATE: Every Tuesday morning

TIME: Meet at 6:45 AM, vigil on the Pedestrian Bridge from 7:00-9:00AM

Please note: the intent of the action is not to engage in confrontation with the CHP or Police Officers; rather we are non-violently affirming our civil right to free speech and freedom of assembly.

REPORTS from the street

No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There is too much work to do. - Dorothy Day

From: "Nadel, Nancy" <nnadel@oaklandnet.com">

The city of Oakland passed a resolution in December of 2001 against unilateral action to make war. Please forward any "police hassling comments" to me with description of comment and badge number.

Well folks, I've been putting this off, being in denial, as it were, not wanting to talk about what we should do if the war starts. But people have started to ask me, and we have discussed it some at the Lake, so it is time that I sent info out to all of you.

We are still holding out hope that there will be no war. We are hoping for the best while preparing for the worst.

OAKLAND
PNVRC EMERGENCY CONTINGENCY PLANS

LMNOP | 510 763 8712

Dear anti-war activists and peace-loving friends,

We continue to hope that Day X will never come. However, it is clear that our government is intent on going to war very very soon. Some think perhaps as soon as Wednesday. (March 19th, 2003)

We at PNVRC do not want to invoke our contingency plans until we know for sure. However, the nonviolence training component of our contingency plan, which originally was scheduled for Day X, will happen Wednesday, March 19th at 7:00 PM (note the time change) at First Unitarian Church of Oakland, (685 14th Street at Castro) in conjunction with the Buddhist Peace Fellowship. You are invited to participate in anticipation of Day X.

In the event that Wednesday is Day X, we will gather at 5:00 PM at Frank Ogawa Plaza for our march followed by the interfaith gathering at 6:30PM. We will then join the Buddhist Peace Fellowship nonviolence training at the First Unitarian Church.

The rest of our plans for Day X remain unaltered.

In Peace,
The PNVRC Coordinating Committee
Jacqueline Cabasso, Judi Hirsch, Wendy Kaufmyn, Jack Kurzweil , Sherry Larsen-Beville, Ying Lee, Andy Lichterman, Grace Morizawa, Nancy Nadel, Phyllis Olin, Cecile Pineda, Wilson Riles, Patricia St. Onge, Anne Symens-Bucher, Anne Weills, Laura Wells, Randall White

Gather in Frank Ogawa Plaza Please bring banners, candles, and signs. Patricia St. Onge and Wilson Riles, Jr. will facilitate the gathering where we will have speakers from the community. We will also have music before we commence the march.

5:00 PM: Singing for Peace. http://www.betsyrosemusic.org/SFPmainpage.html

5:30 PM | March through downtown Oakland
Route:

  • March down Broadway and pause at the freeway ramp where we will be visible to commuters.
  • Proceed through and around Jack London Square.
  • March back down Broadway turning right on 7th to go through Chinatown.
  • Turn left on Webster and then left on 12th returning to Frank Ogawa Plaza amphitheatre.
  • Map of route.
6:30 PM | Interfaith Gathering
This will be in the amphitheatre unless it is raining. If that is the case, we'll go directly to First Unitarian Church of Oakland.

7:00 PM | NonViolence Training * See above note for times if "Day X."

It is not necessarily intended to prepare people specifically for civil disobedience on the following morning (although it can help with that if participants desire.) Rather it is to deepen our own understanding and commitment to a nonviolent response.

7:00 AM Morning After | Gather at Oakland Federal Building for a somber vigil

BERKELEY
BERKELEY PEACE WALK + VIGIL

The moment is here:

The man who stole the presidency has given Saddam 48 hours.

If the man who stole the presidency is true to his word, an invasion may be announced as soon as Wednesday, March 19th. However, the Leader of the British House of Commons just resigned in protest of the war. Britain may yet pull out.

Every Wednesday for nearly the last year and a half people have walked the streets of Berkeley for peace.

If the unthinkable comes on Wednesday, we will meet at the Berkeley BART station to mount a solemn candle-lit vigil and march down University Avenue to the Pedestrian Bridge. Please bring a wind-protected candle and walk with us.

Please note: a march and rally is planned by Int’l ANSWER for the day the invasion is announced at 5PM (gather at Powell and Market, San Francisco). However, it is very likely that attacks will be announced during prime time TV, after 5 PM. If Wednesday evening coincides with the march and rally coordinated by International ANSWER, then this vigil and march will be cancelled. Check the ANSWER website www.internationalanswer.org or call 415-821-6545 for up to date info.

BERKELEY STOP THE WAR COALITION
www.berkeleystopthewar.org/
In the event of war breaking out, when the U.S. military carries out the massive attack on Baghdad they are planning (which would involve more cruise missles in the initial 48 hours than they fired in the entire first Gulf War), immediate responses are being planned in the Bay Area: Day-After: Noon at Sproul Plaza [Located at D4].

The following weekday after the attacks begin, join thousands of people at the UC Berkeley campus to voice your outrage. Walk out of your classes, walk off the job, whatever it takes to get to the protest. The Berkeley Stop the War Coalition will have a sound system, speakers, and help organize the protest.

We need your help to make these plans a success! Here's what you can do:

  • Spread the word about these plans to everyone you know (classmates, co-workers, friends, the person sitting next to you on the bus... everyone!)
  • Talk to your professors about canceling class the day after the bombing so that everyone can come to the demonstration.
  • Make an announcement in your classes about these plans, and convince your classmates to walk out with you.
  • Talk to your co-workers about taking an "extended lunch break" on that day to participate in the protests.
  • If you can help coordinate the turnout from a given class or workplace, please let us know. Send us email at ucbstopthewar@hotmail.com and include the name of the class, the name of the professor (particularly if they're willing to help or cancel class), and your name and contact info.

The event is to take place the first business day after war begins, starting at 4 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Park behind City Hall.

We'll set it for the same day as the noon walk-out and Sproul Plaza rally organized at UC-Berkeley by the Berkeley Stop the War Coalition. That event is to be the first business day after war starts, most likely the first business day after the 5-p.m. rally at Powell and Market Streets in San Francisco being called by International ANSWER.
