Daily Fact & Act #29
Friday, October 18 1991*
From San Jose
LMNOP - Lake Merritt Neighbors Organized for Peace
http://lmno4p.org

*This is 1991, right? Recession, war on Iraq, lower markets, low employment, low job creation, weak dollar, a "president" who is out of touch-- "It's the economy stupid" --with the people, lies and rumors being touted by politicians and the press as truth, government actions causing mass protests in the streets.

Analysis
The bombing has already begun.

Therefore take heed how you impawn our person, How you awake our sleeping sword of war: We charge you, in the name of God, take heed; For never two such kingdoms did contend Without much fall of blood; whose guiltless drops Are every one a woe, a sore complaint 'Gainst him whose wrong gives edge unto the swords That make such waste in brief mortality.

Henry V (Act 1 Scene 2) - William Shakespeare

Many of us are waiting to take the streets when the initial bombing begins as we did in January 1991. It has begun. We must not hesitate to go into the streets, to continue to lobby, to spread peace, to begin, each, our own expression of stopping this action by those who are neither representing the people of the United States nor the family of the unifying world.

Tell Senator Feinstein how you feel about her vote for Bush's War! Senator Dianne Feinstein voted to authorize President Bush to use force against Iraq despite the feedback from her constituents: 29,937 calls against a potential war over the past two months compared with just 683 in favor of it.

If you were you one of the nearly thirty thousand constituents to call Senator Feinstein in the last few months or one of the tens of thousands of Californians who signed petitions to her or wrote letters asking her not to support an unprovoked war on Iraq here is your opportunity to tell her what you think in person. She'll be speaking at a public event on Saturday at the Delancey Street Foundation, along with Supervisor Gavin Newsom and GAP Chairman Donald Fisher. Bring signs!

Only three Bay Area Congress members voted in support of Bush's war on Iraq: Senator Diane Feinstein, Representative Ellen Tauscher, and Representative Tom Lantos. Lantos led the rush to war among his fellow Democrats as the ranking minority member of the House International Relations Committee.

Please join Peace Action of San Mateo County, Peninsula Peace and Justice Center, and Global Exchange at a protest to tell Tom Lantos what we think about his vote for a war on Iraq. We will tell him that a U.S. attack on Iraq will take the lives of U.S. soldiers and many innocent Iraqis, harm relations with our European allies, increase anti-American sentiment in the Middle East, break international law, and cost American taxpayers billions of dollars at a time when the US economy is stumbling.

Fact
Since mid-September, Tallil Air Base a key link in an Iraqi air defense network that remains formidable despite damage from years of periodic U.S. bombing has been struck seven times, more than any other target in that period, according to Central Command, the headquarters for U.S. operations in the Persian Gulf.

Besides Tallil, the other major air defense sites in southern Iraq that have been hit recently are Al Kut, Al Amarah and the airport at Basra. On Tuesday, the Central Command said allied aircraft bombed a command and control communications facility near Al Kut, in response to unspecified "hostile acts" by Iraq.

In contrast to the recent flurry of allied attacks in the south -- 23 since Aug. 27 -- there were none reported in northern Iraq in that period.

Tallil was targeted by allied bombers during the 1991 Gulf War, in part because it was considered a probable storage site for chemical weapons. It reportedly served as a staging point for Iraq's airborne chemical attacks against Iran in the 1980s. Post-Gulf War U.N. inspections found no evidence of chemical weapons there.
