Candlelight Vigil:
Candelight Vigil at the Colonnade
LMNOP
A quiet vigil to honor those who are dying in Iraq (as well as to show our opposition to this horrible war, of course). They will not have organized singing, but we will have Stephen Kelly playing his flute in the background throughout. Also want to have Webb Mealy's "light show" projections of anti-war slogans and images of Iraqi citizens cast onto the top wall of the colonnade, to make it abundantly clear to passing motorists why we are out there. Bring your own candles, and paper cups or something to protect them from the wind, if you can. We will have some extras for those who can't. And please please spread the word.

Demonstration:
Waves of Collateral Damage Action
DRESS IN BLACK
What: Waves of Collateral Damage Wander through downtown San Francisco.
Time (3 shifts): 7am - 9:30am, 11:45am - 2:15pm, 4:45 - 7:00
Mood: somber, profound, silent, peaceful.
Goal: To continue bringing reality to the streets of San Francisco making sure folks don’t forget what is going on in Iraq as they go about their daily routine in SF. This is meant to be a non- arrestible activity but there are not guarantees on the streets of San Francisco.

Details: We will have people dressed in black gather at Justin Herman Plaza at the beginning of the times stated above. They will be given a placard to wear (back and front) and white powder on their face.
The placard will say
COLLATERAL DAMAGE
Iraqi civilian # "X" or US Soldier # "Y"
Killed in "location in Iraq"
On "date"
YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK

Groups of 10 people start from Justin Herman Plaza (mix of 9 Iraqi civilians and 1 US soldier) to wander in downtown SF (both financial and shopping district) for a few hours wandering into shopping centers, banks, building lobbies, in BART stations, just walking on the sidewalk. The idea is to get the key times – morning, lunch and end of the workday when most people are out on the street maximising the amount of people who see the groups of folks walking around.

Morning and lunchtime shift routes: We will have a map of SF that you can choose your route the idea being that you get maximum exposure, BART stations, food courts, SF shopping center, Embarcadero center, Union Square. Final shift: Those taking part in the end of the workday shift will gather in Justin Herman Plaza at 4:45. At 5:00pm we will begin walking up Market street to Powell, Powell to Union Square. We will end the procession by walking around Union Square and then gathering in a silent circle/peace sign in Union Square holding candles. The final shift will possibly be accompanied by the Brass Liberation Orchestra (to be contacted by someone from greenies4peace to see if they are available). greenies4peace@yahoo.com 415 255 9221 ext 301

SPIRITUAL GATHERING FOR PEACE: INTERFAITH PRAYER & ACTION
On Friday, March 28th, hundreds of people joined together at the SF Federal Building to pray and sign an open letter to George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, and to our Senators and Representatives. Afterwards, 84 people committed civil disobedience. The event was so powerful and peaceful that people expressed a desire to continue it. Please join them again this coming Friday.

ALL DAY
National Day of DIRECT Action and Civil Disobedience to Stop the War at Home and Abroad
Direct Action To Stop the War
In our collective efforts to build a mass movement of principled non-violent resistance to the U.S.-led war on Iraq, Direct Action to Stop the War (San Francisco/Bay Area) is calling a National Day of Direct Action and Civil Disobedience to Stop the War at Home and Abroad. We call upon all cities, organizations, and individuals to organize widespread non-cooperation targeting:
--Federal and Government buildings
--Oil corporations
--Arms manufacturers
--Arms transportation systems

On Monday April 7th, instead of going to work or school, sustain the resistance to this war by participating in or supporting mass nonviolent direct action in any way possible.

Speaker:
JUSTICE IS THE MOTHER OF PEACE
Presented by WENDY SNYDER

Martin Luther King, Jr. said it: Peace is not the absence of tension but the presence of justice. A community forum including Omali Yeshitela -- leader of the International People's Democracy Uhuru Movement -- will address peace with justice. An anti-war movement becomes broad, inclusive, and effective when it supports justice.

This forum is FREE, but donations are most welcome. They will benefit the African People’s Solidarity Committee. "Uhuru" is an African word meaning "freedom." With justice, peace and freedom will shine like the sun.

Power and Terror: Noam Chomsky in our Times

The most important aspect of this film is the message of courage and optimism Chomsky gives to our efforts to date. Go see it and get your well deserved pat on the back. Especially exciting for me were the scenes of Palo Alto and Berkeley Community Theater and our own Barbara Lubin while I was sitting in the Film Forum in Greenwich Village.

  • Film:
    Ararat

Atom Egoyan has done it again. From the writer/director of "The Sweet Hereafter" -- a quietly devastating film about a tragic school bus accident and the resulting corruption of lawyers and insurance companies -- comes Ararat, a film about the Armenian Holocaust as told through art historians, descendants, artists, custom officers, actors and directors concentric to the making of a film about the artists Gorky and the crimson Cross Doctor who both witnessed the Armnenian Holocaust in 1915. Egoyan writes the powerful soundtrack, some of which is recorded in an ancient chapel in Armenia that figures into the plot.
